For her part that morning, Rosalind prepared the breakfast meal wordlessly for her mother and brother. She fed the chickens and the goat, and cleaned the house, whilst Bertie watched her, sitting at the table. Her fury towards him had not abated; indeed it only grew, but she also felt trapped by his presence. He was sure to follow her today. Henry would be wondering where she was, she knew. With each passing moment, her distress increased.

At last it was mid-morning, and she could bear it no longer. She set out into the woods, and sure enough, as she peered out through the brambles, she saw the door of the house open and Bertie come outside.
